Makanaka Kunaka: A Rising Star in Netball

I’m Makanaka Kunaka, and my journey in netball began at an early age in primary school. Growing up with a passion for the sport was only natural, as my mother owns a netball club, Strikers, which competes in Division 1 (ZINA). Being surrounded by the game from such a young age allowed me to develop my skills and deepened my love for netball.

Early Achievements

My hard work and dedication paid off when I was drafted for the Under-20 team at just 13 years old, as a Form One student at Cherutombo High School. This early achievement was a testament to my commitment to the sport and the strong foundation I built through years of practice and exposure.

Inspiring Others

As I continue my journey, I make it a point to encourage my classmates and fellow students to participate in sporting activities they are passionate about. I believe that everyone has the potential to excel, and it’s essential not to doubt oneself. Taking part in sports not only fosters teamwork and discipline but also builds confidence and resilience.

National Representation

Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to represent my school at the national level, playing with the Under-20 girls. Competing on such a significant stage was both thrilling and rewarding. It fueled my ambition to aim even higher in my netball career.

Mason Mudani: A Journey from Soccer to Rugby Success

At just 18 years old, Mason Mudani has already made a significant mark in the field of sports. His journey began in 2024, when a chance encounter during a soccer session changed the course of his athletic career.

After a rigorous practice, one of Mason’s coaches approached him with an unexpected opportunity: a tryout for the school rugby team. Intrigued and eager for a new challenge, Mason decided to give it a shot. Little did he know, this decision would set him on a remarkable path.

Embracing the Challenge

Mason’s transition from soccer to rugby was not without its challenges. He faced intense competition during the tryouts, but his dedication and hard work shone through. His determination paid off as he earned a spot on the school rugby team, proving that he was more than capable of excelling in a new sport.

The Tournament Experience

Shortly after joining the team, Mason participated in a rugby tournament hosted by Marondera High School, a neighboring school known for its strong rugby program. With adrenaline pumping and the support of his teammates, Mason took to the field with unyielding spirit. The tournament was a whirlwind of excitement, teamwork, and a test of skill.

Mason’s performance did not go unnoticed. His agility, strategic thinking, and ability to work cohesively with his teammates led to a standout performance. By the end of the tournament, Mason was not only celebrating a successful outing but was also selected to represent Marondera at the provincial level in the rugby sevens game.

Provincial to National Success

Mason’s journey continued to escalate as he participated in the provincial tournament. The competition was fierce, but the team’s synergy, combined with Mason’s athletic prowess, propelled them to new heights. Their hard work culminated in an invitation to the national level tournament in Bulawayo, where teams from across the country gathered to compete.

At the national tournament, Mason and his teammates faced some of the best players from nine provinces. With every match, they fought valiantly, showcasing their skills and resilience. Their teamwork and perseverance paid off as they secured a remarkable third place, earning a bronze medal—a testament to their dedication and hard work.

Celebrating Achievements

Returning to school with a bronze medal in hand, Mason was greeted as a hero by his peers. Alongside his teammates, Tendai Kwari and Adam Anderson, he celebrated not just their individual achievements, but the collective triumph of their school. The experience taught him invaluable lessons about teamwork, discipline, and the importance of seizing opportunities.

Tatenda Emmanuel Anderson: Rising Star in Rugby and Athletics

From a young age, Tatenda Emmanuel Anderson was destined for greatness in sports. Born into an athletic family, his father was a skilled goalkeeper, while his older brother excelled in various sports. However, it was the inspiring success stories of his second older brother that truly ignited Tatenda’s passion and ambition to carve out his own path in athletics and beyond.

A Sporting Legacy

Growing up in this environment, Tatenda was immersed in the world of sports, where competition and perseverance were daily norms. As a 15-year-old at Cherutombo High School, he seized every opportunity to prove himself. His hard work and dedication paid off, particularly in the 100-meter sprint races, where he garnered accolades and recognition for his speed and determination.

A New Opportunity

In 2024, a pivotal moment arrived when Mr. Male, his current rugby coach, extended an invitation for Tatenda to try out for the rugby team. Although rugby had never been on his radar, Tatenda embraced the challenge. With his natural athleticism and physicality, he quickly adapted to the sport, impressing his coaches and teammates alike.

His perseverance and skill caught the attention of his coaches, leading to his selection for the school’s first XV rugby team. Tatenda’s debut match against Marondera High School was a turning point—he not only showcased his potential but also began to solidify his place in the rugby community.

Rising Through the Ranks

Following his impressive performance, Tatenda’s journey continued to ascend. He was drafted into the Mashonaland team, representing his province at the national level tournament in Bulawayo. Competing against nine other provinces, the stakes were high, but Tatenda and his team persevered. Through teamwork, strategy, and sheer determination, they secured a commendable third-place finish, returning home with bronze medals and an overwhelming sense of pride.

Now, as a Form Three student, I continue to push boundaries and strive for excellence. Recently, I triumphed in the provincial competitions and am eagerly preparing to compete in the national championships in Bindura on April 3rd, 2025.

Throughout this journey, I have learned invaluable lessons about perseverance, hard work, and the importance of seizing opportunities. My passion for sports drives me forward, and I am excited to see where it will take me next. As I look ahead, I am committed to inspiring others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles they may face.

Tendai J. Kwari :From Discouragement to Triumph: The Journey of “Beast”

    Growing up as a young athlete in South Africa, I proudly held the shot put record in my valley during my primary school years. However, my move to Zimbabwe for high school brought unexpected challenges. I found myself discouraged from pursuing sports, especially rugby—my true passion—due to the prevalent belief that it was virtually non-existent in the country.

A Twist of Fate

Just as I was beginning to lose hope, fate intervened. During a visit to the school grounds, I stumbled upon fellow students throwing shot put. The sight reignited my interest in athletics, compelling me to pursue my passion once more. With newfound determination, I immersed myself in training, eager to reclaim my place in the sports world.

Surprising Success

In 2023, as a Form One student, I made an astonishing debut at the national athletics championships, surprising everyone—including myself—with my talent and performance. This unexpected success served as a springboard for further achievements, and I returned to the nationals in Victoria Falls the following year, building on my momentum and continuing to hone my skills.

Embracing New Challenges

Athletics was not the only sport where I found success. When rugby was introduced at my school, I saw an opportunity to expand my athletic repertoire. I committed myself to the sport and quickly made my way to the Under-18 rugby nationals in Bulawayo. Just weeks later, I received the exhilarating news of my selection for the Under-20 rugby team headed to Mutare.

This remarkable journey culminated in a historic achievement: I became the first athlete to represent my school at three national competitions in a single year. In recognition of my outstanding performance and dedication, my school awarded me a scholarship—a testament to the hard work and determination that fueled my journey.

Tavonga Choruwa: Rising Star in Handball

My name is Tavonga Choruwa, and I am a Form Two student at Cherutombo High School. My journey in handball began at the primary level, where I first discovered my passion for the sport. Little did I know that this early interest would evolve into a remarkable journey filled with challenges and triumphs.

A New Beginning

Last year, as a Form One student, I eagerly joined the school handball team. Despite being a newcomer, I was determined to make my mark. I practiced diligently, participating in both junior and senior teams, including the Under-15, Under-17, and Under-20 categories as a goalkeeper. My commitment and hard work quickly paid off, and I began to earn the respect and support of my teammates and coaches.

District and Provincial Success

My efforts led me to compete at the district level, where I showcased my skills and passion for the game. It was during this time that I caught the attention of Naggle House Girls High School, a neighboring institution. They invited me to play for their Under-15 and Under-17 teams, a significant opportunity that I gladly accepted.

Competing at the provincial level was an exhilarating experience. With unwavering determination, I helped lead our team to victory, clinching the championship title. This triumph fueled my ambition, and I was soon on my way to the national competitions, where our team finished an impressive second place.

I am Tadiwanashe Matora, a Form 4 student at Cherutombo High School, and my journey in basketball has been nothing short of transformative. As a Form 3 student, I was thrilled to be drafted for the Marondera district team. This opportunity was a dream come true, but I knew it came with great responsibility. I dedicated myself to training, pushing my limits alongside my teammates. The camaraderie we built on and off the court was invaluable, and it fueled my determination to succeed.

I made it a point to train every morning at 6 AM before heading to school. This rigorous routine allowed me to balance my academic responsibilities with my commitment to basketball. Each early morning session was a testament to my dedication and love for the sport, and it taught me the importance of discipline and hard work.
