Cherutombo High School Background History
Throughout the evolution of our school’s leadership, a profound commitment to excellence has been the guiding force. Beginning with Mr. Mufambisi and continuing through the dedicated tenures of Mr. Chiunda (acting Head), Mr. Samapundu, to Mrs. Kutoka(acting Head), each leader has contributed uniquely to our mission, passing the school to its next leaders. Mr. Chiparaushe’s transition to Mr. Ndoro, following his promotion from Theydon, marked a pivotal moment, as did Ms. Mhuriro’s acting role before Mr. Nzenze took the helm. The journey was not without its challenges; a significant gap in leadership was felt until the late Mr. Tandi stepped in, only for his promising term to be cut short by illness. Mr. Maruni then took on the mantle of acting head, skillfully guiding the school forward, eventually passing the baton to our current head, Mr. Chiwoto. Each of these leaders has shared a common vision: to transform our institution into a cutting-edge educational powerhouse, paving the way for its ascendance toward Ivy League status. Their collective efforts and unwavering dedication have shaped the vibrant community we cherish today, fostering an environment where excellence thrives and future leaders are born.

Established in 1989 in the vibrant Nyameni area, where it was hosted by Nyameni primary school and Marondera high school being the Parent and caretaking school under Mr Mufambisi, Cherutombo High School began its journey with just two Form 1 classes, guided by visionary leadership that laid a strong foundation for what would become a beacon of hope and opportunity in the community. With a small but committed team, including a bursar, receptionist, accounts clerk, and caretaker, the school started on a modest municipal payroll, driven by a shared dream of educational excellence.

By 1990, the school embraced growth, expanding to two classes per stream for both Form 1 and Form 2. This pioneering spirit led to the establishment of Cherutombo High School as a significant milestone, laying the groundwork for future generations. During this period, the remarkable involvement of CIDA [Canadian International Development Agency (a former Canadian federal organization that administered foreign aid programs)], working in conjunction with the Municipality of Marondera and this resulted in the establishment of a well-developed school to the Municipality of Marondera, complete with an administrative block, science lab, fashion and fabrics block, library, and ten other vital facilities. This expansion not only increased enrollment but also created various forms of employment, empowering the entire community.
In 1992, the school celebrated another landmark moment by enrolling its first O Level students for the Cambridge examinations, marking the beginning of a new era. The mid-2000s saw the introduction of A Level programs, further enhancing academic offerings. The school faced significant challenges during the 2008-2009 Zimbabwean crisis but emerged stronger, with O Level classes rising to an impressive seven classes per stream, each filled with 30 to 40 eager learners. Improved pass rates became a testament to the resilience and dedication of both staff and students.

As leadership transitioned, further enhancements to the school were initiated, including significant infrastructure developments. Facilities like a school hall, geography block, and A Level science labs transformed the learning environment, proving that even in challenging times, growth and progress were possible. The late 2010s welcomed innovative approaches to learning systems, enriching the educational experience further and leading to modernized classrooms and new infrastructure.
Today, since 2023 Mr Chiwoto carries on with the school in his hands, the school stands at the forefront of educational excellence, with pass rates soaring to over 90% for A Levels and 50% for O Levels. Ambitious plans for a three-story classroom block and the integration of advanced learning equipment are transforming Cherutombo High School from a traditional municipal institution into a premier A1 government school, surpassing many neighboring establishments.
As we reflect on our journey, we celebrate not just our achievements but the profound impact we have made in the local community. Cherutombo High School thrives as a testament to resilience, dedication, and the unwavering belief in the power of education. Together, we continue to inspire future generations, nurturing the leaders of tomorrow and fostering a legacy of excellence that will endure for years to come.
